Indoor HDTV antenna
An indoor HDTV antenna(aerial) is essentially used for convenience. People that live in apartments or accommodation where there is no private property to install an outdoor type antenna use indoor varieties. Such aerial is also easier to install. However its range is limited. If you are living in a metropolitan area and are fairly close to a broadcasting tower then it will be suitable otherwise you probably need an amplified or outdoor variety.
In good-signal areas, small low-gain antennas may work fine. Indoor aerial nearly always work up to 10 miles from the transmitter. They often work up to 20 miles for people who live on hillcrests, and sometimes 30 miles if the transmitting tower is visible
The perfect place for an antenna placed to be at home is next to the window. This helps in proper reception of signals.
The highest performing indoor antenna is a two-bay (UHF only). This is an outdoor antenna, but it is small enough to use indoors. It is big, 13″x19″, and not especially pretty, but if you are desperate, some sacrifices are acceptable. You will have to invent some kind of a stand for it. Two-bay antennas are made by Channel Master (4220) and by Terrestrial Digital(DB-2).

In the indoor UHF antenna category, the DB-2 is the clear performance winner, although the Silver Sensor is much better looking. Presently the DB-2 lacks a stand, and if you buy one you will have to invent something to hold it up. In a poor-signal neighborhood is not bad to get a Channel Master 7777 amplifier, connect a DB-2 to its UHF input, and connect rabbit ears to the VHF input.
